There are two primary considerations: filtration and hardness.</p><p>Filtration gets rid of tiny particles, such as sand or rust, in your water. If these particles were allowed to enter your machine they could cause all manner of trouble, particularly by clogging the precise valves and mechanisms in your espresso machine. Almost any water filter will do the job, whether it&#x2019;s the one built into your fridge, a Brita, or a whole house filter. Ensuring that this filter is replaced in proper time will be important to ensure machine health.</p><p>Water hardness is equally important. First, use the water hardness test strips included with your machine to test the water you plan to use with your machine. Ideally, we want a hardness of between 35-85 ppm (parts per million). Hardness refers to the dissolved solids in your water. Common dissolved solids are things like magnesium, calcium, and various forms of sodium. These dissolved solids are what make water, and therefore espresso, taste good. But too much will result in scale buildup in your machine. Scale can cause irreparable damage to your machine by clogging and forming a mineralized layer over the surface of metal parts. The process of descaling is even more damaging, eating away at the machines metal internals. Luckily, scale can be entirely avoided by keeping your water hardness within the recommended TDS range of 35-85 ppm.</p><p>There are numerous methods to soften your water should its dissolved solid content be too high.</p><p><strong>A note on RO (Reverse Osmosis) or Distilled Water</strong></p><p>Taste aside, espresso machines require some mineral content in order to function properly. Their steam boiler fill probes, in particular, use the conductivity of water to detect the water level. With no dissolved solids, they&#x2019;ll overfill, giving you water instead of steam. You <strong>must</strong> add some mineral content back in. Our recommendation is <a href="https://clivecoffee.com/products/third-wave-water-packets-12-pack">Third Wave Water packets</a> which are designed to offer ideal flavor and to be safe for your machine.</p><p><strong>Reservoir Solutions</strong></p><p>Our first recommendation is an <a href="https://clivecoffee.com/products/oscar-water-softening-pouch">in-reservoir water softening pouch</a>. They&#x2019;re affordable, last 4-6 months, and are very effective. Using RO water purchased by the gallon in combination with <a href="https://clivecoffee.com/products/third-wave-water-packets-12-pack">Third Wave Water packets</a> is another great option.</p><p><strong>Direct Plumb Solutions</strong></p><p>For machines that are plumbed in, we recommend our <a href="https://clivecoffee.com/products/water-softening-and-filtration-system?ref=">Water Softening and Filtration kit</a>. It includes everything you&#x2019;ll need to ensure the water is safe for your machine and delivers the best taste for your espresso.</p><p>No matter what solution you pick we recommend testing the water coming from your machine&#x2019;s group head every few months. City water hardness changes seasonally and softening systems wear out. Routine testing will ensure you keep your machine safe.</p><h3 id="first-time-setup">First time setup</h3><p>First, there is a pair of connected cables that extend from the espresso machine - one with a black tip and one with a white plastic tip. These must be routed to the under-counter case and connected to their respective ports at the top right corner of the rear face. Ensure these are firmly seated to avoid disconnection in the future.</p><p>Next, you&apos;ll need to connect the braided line which extends from the under-counter case to the espresso machine. Thread the line up through the hole in your counter and attach it to the water inlet found on the underside of the espresso machine at the back. Hand tighten and then apply an additional half-turn with an adjustable wrench.</p><h3 id="reservoir-setup">Reservoir setup</h3><p>The machine arrives in reservoir mode, so you can simply fill the reservoir with your filtered and softened water, leaving a few inches at the top to prevent spillage. The reservoir is removable. Ensure that you do not spill water on top of the machine when filling, as this may cause electrical damage. Once the reservoir is full, turn on the main power switch found at the lower right corner of the face of the espresso machine.</p><p>If your reservoir is full, some lights are on, but the PID display is off it may be due to the machine not detecting the magnet. This may be due to the magnetic float coming out of its housing in which case you should find it floating loose in the reservoir. Simply place it back inside its plastic housing with the black circular magnet facing the front of the machine and press the plastic clip into place above it.</p><h3 id="water-line-setup">Water line setup</h3><p>Find the braided line included in the box. Attach one end to the threaded water outlet which is found on top of the under-counter case, adjacent to its built-in braided line. Hand tighten and apply an additional half-turn with an adjustable wrench. The other end connects to your water supply outlet.</p><p>Turn the valve found on top of the under-counter case such that it points toward the water spout icon. Next, flip the switch at the back of the under-counter case toward the water spout icon. You can now turn on the main power switch found at the lower right corner of the face of the espresso machine.</p><h3 id="programming-pid-and-settings">Programming PID and Settings</h3><p>If you&#x2019;d like to change either boiler&#x2019;s temperature, you can do so using the two buttons on the PID. First, press both buttons at the same time, which will then display &#x201C;T1.&quot; T1 represents brew boiler temperature. By pressing the plus button, you can enter that setting. You&#x2019;ll then see the current target temperature (200 by default). By using the two buttons you can increase or decrease the temperature. Waiting for a moment will send you back out the main menu, showing &#x201C;T1.&quot; From here, pressing the minus button will move you to &#x201C;T2&#x201D;, which represents the steam boiler temperature. You can enter and change this as well. Pressing the minus button again will exit the menu.</p><p>When it comes to brew temperature, we recommend staying between 195 and 200&#xB0;F, using lower temperatures for darker roasts, and higher temperatures for lighter ones. As always, experimentation is highly encouraged. Steam boiler temperature is set to its maximum by default, and it&#x2019;s probably best to leave it there for maximum steaming performance. You can also turn off the steam boiler using this switch hidden behind the drip tray. If you notice any damage, <a href="https://clivecoffee.com/pages/contact" rel="noopener" target="_blank">contact us immediately</a>.</li><li>Save all packaging as this is needed for <a href="https://clivecoffee.com/pages/returns-and-exchanges" rel="noopener" target="_blank">returns</a> and <a href="https://clivecoffee.com/pages/espresso-machine-repair-service" rel="noopener" target="_blank">repairs</a>.</li></ul><h3 id="step-2-setting-up-the-under-counter-box"><strong>Step 2: Setting up the under counter box</strong></h3><ul><li>Note: In order to set up the machine you&#x2019;ll need a hole in your counter that measures 2 inches in diameter directly under or behind the machine.</li><li>Place the under counter box in cabinet under the machine, ensuring that it is set on a solid level surface. This will ensure safety and result in silent operation by reducing vibration.</li><li>We&#x2019;ll route this female power cable, this smaller power cable, and the machine&#x2019;s braided line through the hole in the countertop.</li><li>Connect the two power cables to their respective ports on the back of the box as shown. We&#x2019;ll address the braided water line in a moment.</li></ul><h3 id="step-3-water-quality-and-plumbing-in-your-machine"><strong>Step 3: Water Quality and Plumbing in your machine</strong></h3><ul><li>Before introducing any water to the machine, it&#x2019;s important to test it to make sure it is adequately soft</li><li>Use the included water test strip to verify the softness of your water. Ideally, we&#x2019;re looking for a softness below 50 ppm.</li><li>Please read <a href="https://clivecoffee.com/blogs/learn/the-importance-of-water-and-your-machine" rel="noopener" target="_blank">The Importance of Water and Your Machine</a> to learn more about our recommendations for water quality.</li><li>Now that we&#x2019;ve verified our water is softened and filtered, we&#x2019;ll first connect the water line that extends from the box to the machine on top of the counter. Thread it through the hole in the counter, hand tighten it to the water inlet on the underside of the machine, and then give it a quarter turn with a wrench.</li><li>At this point, if you plan to use the machine&#x2019;s internal reservoir you can simply fill it with water now and continue to step 4.</li><li>If you plan to direct plumb the machine, we&#x2019;ll proceed to fasten one end of the loose braided line to the pump inlet on top of the machine&#x2019;s under-counter case until it is hand tight, then turn it a quarter turn with an adjustable wrench.</li><li>Fasten the other end of the braided line to your water line.</li><li>It is important to make sure that the line pressure going into the machine does not exceed <strong>30-45 PSI</strong>. This will help prevent premature wear and potential damage to the machine.</li><li>Now we&#x2019;ll turn this valve on the machine&#x2019;s under counter box such that it points toward the water spout icon. Next, we&#x2019;ll flip this switch on rear of the box toward the spout icon.</li><li>Open your water line and check for leaks at all the connection points</li></ul><h3 id="step-4-filling-your-boilers-and-turning-on-the-machine"><strong>Step 4: Filling your boilers and turning on the machine</strong></h3><ul><li>Plug in your machine and turn it on</li><li>With the water line open and the machine powered on, it will automatically begin filling the boilers. You&#x2019;ll know the boilers are full when you hear the pump shut off.</li><li>Give the machine at least 20 minutes to come up to temperature. While the PID displays that the water in the boiler is at its target temperature rather quickly, it&#x2019;ll take a little longer for the machine&#x2019;s group head to warm up.</li></ul><p>At this point, your machine is ready to pull your first shots. <p>1. Ensure the water line for the machine is providing adequate water. We recommend a <a href="https://clivecoffee.com/products/pressure-regulator" rel="noopener" target="_blank">pressure regulator like this one here</a> to ensure you are getting 25-40 psi of line pressure going into the machine.</p>
<p>2. Turn off the switch for the reservoir on the pump/reservoir unit - this deactivates the magnet sensor so you do not have to keep a full reservoir of water when the unit is plumbed in.</p>

Turn the machine off and let it cool completely. If the machine is plumbed in, turn off the water line.</p><p>2. Remove the panels from the machine. Carefully separate the two pieces of the check valve with your two wrenches as to not lose the ball or spring inside. Once apart you&apos;ll want to make sure the ball moves freely and there is no buildup on the red gasket inside where the ball sits.</p><p><img alt="20200220_171742" class="hs-image-align-none fr-fic fr-dii" src="https://cdn2.hubspot.net/hubfs/4309359/20200220_171742.jpg" style="width: 688px;" width="688"></p><p>7. Upon reinstallation, you may want to use some PTFE/plumber&apos;s tape to help seal the threads, or a small amount of thread lock to ensure there won&apos;t be any leaks.</p>
