If you notice any damage, <a href="https://clivecoffee.com/pages/contact">contact us immediately</a>.</li><li>Save all packaging in case of <a href="https://clivecoffee.com/pages/returns-and-exchanges">returns</a> and<a href="https://clivecoffee.com/pages/espresso-machine-repair-service">&#xA0;repairs</a>.</li></ul><h3 id="step-2-water-quality-and-filling-the-reservoir">Step 2: Water quality and filling the reservoir</h3><ul><li>Before introducing water to your machine, it&apos;s essential to test it to ensure it&apos;s adequately soft, around 50 ppm (parts per million). Use the included water test strips from your home barista starter kit to verify the hardness of your water. To learn more about our recommendations for water quality, check out our blog post, <a href="https://clivecoffee.com/blogs/learn/the-importance-of-water-and-your-espresso-machine" rel="noopener" target="_blank">The Importance of Water and Your Espresso Machine.</a> Do not use distilled or Zero water in your espresso machine, <em>as the machine will not register that the reservoir has been filled.&#xA0;</em></li><li>Lift the cup railing to remove the cup warming tray. Then, use both hands to remove the reservoir or fill it with water from the top. Fill the water tank with filtered, softened water and place the cup warming tray back on top of the machine.&#xA0;</li><li>Please note that you may have to fill the reservoir once more after the initial boiler fill phase.</li></ul><h3 id="step-3-turning-on-your-machine-and-filling-your-boilers">Step 3: Turning on your machine and filling your boilers</h3><ul><li>Your machine is set for use on a 110v outlet. Prior to starting the machine, check if the steam valve is closed. Check to ensure the machine is off (the power button is not pressed inward) and the drip tray is inserted accurately.</li><li>Plug your machine directly into a grounded socket (do not use an extension cord) and turn it on by using the ON/OFF button on the front panel.</li><li><strong>Fill mode will now commence, and the&#xA0;PID will display the &quot;FIL&quot; message. Simply lift the brew lever and allow water to run from the group head for 35 seconds, then lower the brew lever to the fully closed position. Your machine will now begin heating.</strong>&#xA0;<br><em>Note: You may need to refill your water reservoir during or immediately after this process.&#xA0;</em></li><li>When you move the brew lever down, FIL will disappear from the PID display. After the brew boiler has been filled, the steam boiler is automatically filled with fresh water. As soon as the steam boiler filling is finished, you no longer hear any pump noise. After the boilers are filled, the machine starts heating them up. The PID display shows &#x201D;Heating Up. &quot;&#xA0;</li><li>Place the portafilter into the group head to ensure maximum temperature stability.&#xA0;</li></ul><h3 id="step-4-fast-heat-up-mode-and-pulling-your-first-shots">Step 4: Fast heat-up mode and pulling your first shots</h3><ul><li>The brew boiler will overheat to 130C (266F) for about 4.5 to 5 minutes to stabilize the grouphead temperature more quickly.&#xA0;</li><li>Once at temperature, a <em>flush&#xA0;</em>message will appear on the PID. Lift the brew lever to flush water through the group for 20 seconds to remove the overheated water.&#xA0;</li><li>When flushing is complete, the PID will read <em>ready go!</em> The PID brew temperature will display your set brew temperature plus or minus a few degrees. You are now ready to make espresso.&#xA0;</li><li>Note that if you do not initially flush the machine during fast heat-up, after 60 seconds, the machine will automatically heat down and come to your original set brew temperature.&#xA0;</li><li>Fast heat-up can be turned off in the advanced PID settings.&#xA0;</li><li>At this point, your machine is ready to pull your first shots. Espresso machines have specific water requirements. There are two primary considerations: <strong>filtration and hardness.&#xA0;</strong>Please carefully read about <a href="https://clive-coffee.gorgias.help/en-US/the-importance-of-water-composition-in-espresso-883777">the importance of water in espresso</a> to understand <a href="https://clive-coffee.gorgias.help/en-US/how-water-affects-your-espresso-machine-883778" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">how water affects your espresso machine</a>. For further learning, check out <a href="https://clivecoffee.com/products/coffee-school-water-101-with-third-wave-water" rel="noopener">Coffee School&apos;s Water 101</a></p><p><em>Note: It&apos;s essential to test your water, filter, and soften to obtain 35-85 ppm to avoid scale and damage to your machine. RO (reverse osmosis) or distilled water does not contain enough mineral content and could cause issues with your machine. The <a href="http://www.scaa.org/?d=water-standards&amp;page=resources" rel="noopener" target="_blank">SCA Water for Brewing Standards</a> explains what&apos;s needed to obtain water suitable for your machine and coffee.</em></p><h3 id="technical-details">Technical Details:</h3><p>Please look at the <a href="https://clivecoffee.com/products/profitec-drive-espresso-machine?_pos=1&amp;_psq=Drive&amp;_ss=e&amp;_v=1.0#specs" rel="noopener" target="_blank">spec table on our product page</a> for a complete list of technical details.</p><h3 id="adjusting-the-pid">&#xA0;Adjusting the PID&#xA0;</h3><ul><li>To enter the PID menu, press and hold both buttons briefly. Use the down button to cycle through the menu options. To select a function, press the up key. Now, you can use the up and down buttons to change the desired values.&#xA0;</li><li>In the PID menu, you can adjust the brew temperature, turn the steam boiler on/off, adjust the steam temperature, pre-infusion, eco mode, cleaning reminders for backflushing, reset reminders, advanced user settings, filter change reminders, timer to set a daily on/off schedule, clock set, tank mode for using reservoir or plumb-in modes, temperature unit, temperature offset, and enable fast heating.&#xA0;</li><li>Please refer to the user manual for more information and instructions on PID settings and adjustments.&#xA0;</li></ul><h3 id="using-flow-control">Using flow control&#xA0;</h3><ul><li>The Drive comes with a pre-installed flow control device.&#xA0;</li><li>If you want to operate the machine at the stock flow rate, move the paddle from its closed position with the pump running 1 &#xBC; turns. Note that opening the flow control valve all the way, or two full turns, doubles the machine&#x2019;s flow rate, which we do not recommend.&#xA0;</li><li>A playground of flavor awaits you when experimenting with flow control.
